Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly has recognized Scott Lewis for his Excellence in Pro Bono and Mina Makarious as an Up & Coming Honoree.
Scott recently secured a major victory in the nation’s fight against tobacco for his pro bono clients including the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Heart Association and other public health organizations and Massachusetts pediatricians. The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts ordered the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a final rule requiring graphic health warnings on cigarette packs and in cigarette advertising, as mandated by a 2009 federal law, by March 15, 2020.
Scott is also currently representing the individual members of the Jackson, Mississippi Municipal Airport Authority pro bono in a lawsuit in the Southern District of Mississippi challenging on race discrimination grounds a state statute that would usurp control of the Jackson – Medgar Evers International Airport from the City of Jackson.
Mina Makarious is one of the firm’s youngest partners. His practice focuses on public sector and environmental law. He is currently serving as Town Counsel for Concord and Lexington and co-Town Counsel for Winchester. He also represents public airport owners in Massachusetts, including the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket airports, and nationwide, including San Francisco, Charlotte and San Diego.
He also was a part of the teams at Anderson & Kreiger that helped create the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, a brand new public authority at the time, and he helped revise the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division’s regulations.
