The Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project has awarded Anderson & Kreiger the Pro Bono Asylum Award at PAIR’s 2020 Annual (Virtual) Gala held on June 8, 2020. Anderson & Kreiger has a long tradition of doing a wide variety of pro bono work, ranging from environmental protection and civil rights to cases protecting children and public health.
Anderson & Kreiger was delighted to work with PAIR to secure political asylum for a woman who was facing deportation. She fled Venezuela with her young children after being threatened and detained by the ruling regime due to her support of an opposing political party. Anderson & Kreiger Attorney David Lyons led the team and tried the case in Immigration Court with able assistance from Annie Lee, as well as Kevin Batt and Alex Peebles-Capin. David Lyons said, “Helping my client and her two young children obtain asylum in the United States was one of the most personally gratifying experiences of my legal career. The COVID-19 pandemic proves every day how important it is to have an effective government that serves the people—my client opposed the regime in her home country because of its deep corruption and failure to provide effective services to the citizenry. She was persecuted for daring to oppose the government and fled to the United States, where we will always respect the right to speak out against unjust policies and ineffective government. PAIR’s expertise in asylum law helps to ensure that the United States remains a beacon of freedom and good government. I was honored to work with PAIR on this case and couldn’t have done it without them.”
